Frequently asked questions
Leadership & Philosophy
Leadership is not determined by your title, position, or the letters behind your name.Leadership exists wherever people have influence.Whether you’re a CEO, supervisor, teacher, frontline employee, volunteer, or student, your actions affect the people around you. The way you communicate, solve problems, support others, and respond to challenges all have an impact. That’s why I believe leadership exists at every level. Every person has the opportunity to positively influence their team, workplace, family, or community. The question isn’t whether you have influence. The question is what you’re doing with it.
Leadership and influence are closely connected, but they are not exactly the same thing.Influence is the ability to affect the thoughts, actions, or decisions of others.Leadership is the responsible use of that influence. For example, a manager may be able to use their position to get a team started on a project. That’s authority. But helping people stay committed, overcome challenges, and continue moving toward a goal often requires influence.Leadership happens when people use their influence to guide, support, encourage, and help others succeed. That’s one reason I believe leadership exists at every level. You don’t need a title to influence people. Every day, people influence coworkers, family members, friends, customers, and community members. The real question isn’t whether you have influence. The question is how you’re choosing to use it.
Master Your AO™ is a leadership philosophy inspired by my military experience. In the military, AO stands for Area of Operation. It’s the area you’re responsible for, accountable for, and expected to manage. Every soldier has an AO, regardless of rank.In civilian life, I encourage people to think of AO as their Area of Opportunity.Your AO includes the responsibilities you have today, the relationships you influence, and the opportunities you have to make a positive impact. It includes both the duties listed in your job description and the leadership opportunities that aren’t written down but exist every day.Mastering your AO means becoming a student of your responsibilities. It means learning, growing, improving, and taking ownership of the areas where you can make a difference.Leadership doesn’t require a title. It requires responsibility. Whether you’re a frontline employee, supervisor, executive, volunteer, or student, you have an AO.The question is: Are you mastering it?
Keynotes Workshops & Leadership Development
One of the greatest benefits of a leadership keynote or workshop is that it helps people recognize opportunities that are already right in front of them.Sometimes the most powerful improvements in workplace culture come from simple behaviors that are often overlooked—listening, speaking up, showing appreciation, creating trust, or encouraging open communication.A leadership keynote brings these concepts to the forefront and helps people understand how their daily interactions contribute to the culture around them. When people feel heard, respected, and psychologically safe, collaboration improves, communication strengthens, and workplace culture becomes healthier for everyone.
While every organization is different, common outcomes include stronger communication, improved teamwork, increased trust, and a greater sense of shared responsibility. Many organizations are also looking for ways to strengthen psychological safety so employees feel comfortable contributing ideas, asking questions, and addressing challenges before they become larger problems.Leadership keynotes and workshops provide practical tools that help individuals recognize their influence, improve collaboration, and contribute to a culture where people can do their best work. The result is often stronger team cohesion, healthier workplace relationships, and improved organizational performance.
Leadership begins with communication.Trust is built through communication.Empathy is demonstrated through communication.Confidence is developed through communication.Employees are more engaged when they understand expectations, feel heard, and believe their contributions matter. Strong leaders communicate in ways that create clarity, build trust, and encourage participation. When people feel psychologically safe, they’re more willing to share ideas, take initiative, ask questions, and contribute to solutions.Effective leadership communication creates the conditions where engagement can thrive.
Organizations build stronger leaders when they trust people with responsibility and give them opportunities to grow. That means allowing team members to become experts in their area, encouraging them to make decisions, and supporting them as they learn and develop.Strong leadership cultures aren’t built by creating dependence on a few individuals. They’re built by helping people throughout the organization develop confidence, ownership, and decision-making skills. When people know they are trusted and supported, they are more likely to step forward, take initiative, and positively influence those around them. That’s how leadership grows at every level.
Stories help people remember.Facts are important, but stories give those facts meaning. When information is presented as a story, people don’t just hear it—they see it. They create mental pictures. They connect emotionally. They remember the lesson long after the presentation is over. For leaders, storytelling is one of the most effective communication tools available. Stories help leaders explain vision, build trust, share lessons learned, and connect people to a larger purpose.People may forget statistics, but they rarely forget a story that made them think, feel, or see something differently.
Communication Coaching
Communication is one of the most important leadership skills because it is through communication that trust is built, relationships are formed, and influence is created.People decide whether they trust us, understand us, and want to work with us based largely on how we communicate.Regardless of title or position, communication is the tool every leader has access to. It’s the level playing field of leadership.Leadership exists at every level, and communication is often how that leadership is expressed.
PRES+S is a communication framework I developed to help leaders, professionals, and speakers communicate more clearly and confidently.PRES+S stands for:• Point • Reason • Example • Summary • Shhhhh! The final step is often everyone’s favorite. Once you’ve made your point, supported it, and summarized it, stop talking.PRES+S helps people answer questions, lead meetings, tell stories, participate in interviews, and deliver presentations with greater clarity and confidence.
Rambling usually isn’t caused by a lack of knowledge. In fact, it’s often the opposite. Many professionals know so much about a topic that they struggle to decide what information to leave out.One of the simplest ways to stop rambling is to pause before responding. Give yourself a few seconds to think before you speak. Then:• State your point • Explain why • Give an example • Summarize • StopThe goal isn’t to talk more. The goal is to communicate more clearly.
Absolutely.Communication is a skill that can be learned and strengthened. One thing I often tell clients is:“People don’t want to know how extensive your knowledge is until they know that you care.”Effective communication isn’t just about expertise. It’s about helping people understand your message, trust your intentions, and connect with your ideas.Through coaching, professionals learn how to communicate with both competence and warmth—two qualities that build trust and increase influence. The goal isn’t to sound perfect. The goal is to communicate clearly enough that people understand you, connect with you, and take action.
Leadership communication coaching benefits anyone who wants to communicate with greater clarity, confidence, and impact.I frequently work with emerging leaders, professionals preparing for new leadership responsibilities, veterans transitioning into civilian careers, community leaders, women’s leadership groups, and professionals who want to strengthen their communication skills.Because leadership exists at every level, communication coaching can benefit anyone who wants to increase their influence and effectiveness.
Event Planning & Event Services
The most important factor is finding a speaker who is a good fit for your audience and your event goals.A great keynote speaker doesn’t simply deliver a presentation. They help reinforce your message, support your goals, and create an experience that resonates with the audience long after the event is over. The best speaker for your event is the one who can deliver the outcomes your audience needs most.
Absolutely. While it isn’t always common, I have successfully served as both keynote speaker and emcee for many events. When one person serves in both roles, it can create a seamless and cohesive experience for attendees. Rather than treating the keynote and event hosting as separate functions, the message, energy, and audience experience work together to support the overall goals of the event. As an emcee, my role is to keep the audience engaged, connected, and informed throughout the program. As a keynote speaker, my goal is to provide practical insights, meaningful takeaways, and a memorable message.Combining both roles allows me to create a cohesive experience from opening remarks to closing comments, helping audiences feel connected, valued, and engaged throughout the entire event. For event planners, it can also provide consistency in messaging, smoother transitions, and an experience that feels intentional from beginning to end.
The earlier, the better. Many organizations book keynote speakers six months to a year in advance, especially for conferences, annual meetings, leadership events, and large community programs. That said, every event is different.I’ve been booked more than a year in advance, and I’ve also stepped in on very short notice when a scheduled speaker was unable to attend. If you’re considering an event, I encourage you to reach out as early as possible. If I’m available, I’m happy to explore how I can support your audience and event goals.
My most requested topics are Master Your AO™ and Leadership Communication.Master Your AO™ helps audiences focus on their Area of Opportunity—the people, responsibilities, and situations where they can have the greatest impact.Leadership Communication focuses on the skills that help people build trust, strengthen relationships, improve teamwork, and increase their influence.Other frequently requested topics include leadership development, workplace culture, storytelling, communication confidence, employee engagement, and the belief that leadership exists at every level.
